Bonjour! In my last article I defended both Cinderella and Snow White. Now I'm going to defend Aurora and Ariel.
Aurora -
Most people either have a love or hate relationship with Aurora. I love her, but she's not my favourite. Everyone complains that she has an underdeveloped personality and she does nothing, but most of all, people are frustrated about the fact that her eyes change colour.
In contrast, I don't believe she has an underdeveloped personality at all. Out of all the Disney Princesses, she has the least screen-time, (I think it was eighteen minutes or something) and I think Disney did a pretty good job in developing her character in eighteen minutes. What do we know? She's friends with a lot of animals and they help her, she's kind to everybody, humble, surprised that she gets such a lovely birthday present, somewhat cautious of strangers, a day-dreamer, a good dancer and singer, graceful and charming and shy. She also hates the fact that she's suddenly a princess, and wouldn't you be too if you spent sixteen years believing you were this carefree peasant girl who picked berries and had all the freedom in the world?
I don't think she's underdeveloped.
An issue is that she does nothing. When she is told she is a Princess, she cries, settles down a bit, goes to the castle and stupidly pricks her finger. As for the going to the castle bit, most people believe that is dutiful. She is being obedient. She is the Princess and she must help her country. It's the Princesses job. A lot of people believe that she is naive and stupid when she pricks her finger. Um, wake-up call? It was a curse. She didn't do it just because she felt like it. It was meant to happen. And judging by the eerie expression on her face as she walked up the stairs slowly, I think she was hypnotised. Plus there was a scary voice going: "Touch the spindle! Touch it, I say!"
Hypnotised.
I, along with many others, hate the fact that her eyes change colour. One of the biggest questions asked in Disney history is "what colour are Aurora's eyes officially?" In the close-up where she wakes up, her eyes are blue. (She looks beautiful in that scene). But in merchandise and sometimes in other parts of the movie, her eyes are violet. I think officially, her eyes are violet coloured.
I know, it's confusing.
But overall, she's beautiful, kind, gentle, graceful and dutiful. Underdeveloped? I think not.
Ariel -
I'm one of the many people who love Ariel. I love her hair, I love the fact that she's a mermaid. I love everything about her and she was my favourite when I was a kid. (My favourites now are Belle and Elsa, with Ariel coming in second). But people have a lot to complain about her. Sure she's independent and admirably adventurous, but a lot of people believe she is naive, stupid, inconsiderate and careless.
OK, so yes, she did drastically change her body and leave her family while still a teenager. She made a deal with the sea-witch. But all of this wasn't to get a man. Well, not just to get a man. It was more about her happiness. The reason she changed herself was because she wanted a life on land. She wasn't happy where she was and decided to do something about it. Don't believe me? Listen to the song "Part of Your World." She wants to be where the people are. It's not just about Eric.
I don't understand people sometimes as they roar about Cinderella and Snow White not doing anything, but when Ariel does something to achieve her dreams, they scream at her as well. Why???
Granted, she still wanted Eric. She was naive on the "kiss him before the sun sets on the third day" part. She didn't know anything about love. But who's to blame her, really? Eric is a dreamboat. (Please excuse the pun). I believe Eric was more of a trigger, for Ariel to do something about her happiness.
Ariel was a Disney Princess who went out of her way to achieve her goals. In my eyes, the only flaw about her was that she wanted to become human. Why? All my life I've wanted to become a mermaid.
So that's it. There's my rant about Ariel and Aurora. Next time I'll be talking about Belle and Jasmine, but if you haven't already, check out my other article that defends Snow White and Cinderella.
Au revoir!
